BBS Interns

If you are registered with the California BBS as an MFT or PCC intern, or are a graduate student who is looking for an internship, we would like to talk with you and tell you about our office and the possibilities of employment with us.

In California, the process to become a Marriage and Family Therapist is long and intensive.

Once your master's degree is conferred, the Board of Behavioral Science (BBS) can issue you a provisional type of licensed called "Intern Registration". You must gain 3,000 hours of expererience working with families, children, couples, adults and groups before you can begin take your BBS licensing exams.

Our intern employees work either full-time (forty hours per week) or part-time (thirty hours per week).

We are looking for counseling interns to work with children and families at risk. We offer excellent training opportunities and with a case load of up to 25 clients, a supportive environment to rapidly earn your hours toward licensure.

Deligent interns can acquire their BBS required 3,000 hours in about two years while working at Cross Creek Counseling.

Once your 3,000 hours are collected, you send the proof of experience to the BBS. They verify all hours and give you test dates; you must complete a multiple choice written examination.

We provide both individual and group supervision as required by the Board of Behavioral Sciences.

Initially, your case load would consist of children. Over time you will also do family therapy, work with adults in trauma recovery and work with couples. We can cover all the BBS categories needed as you collect your hours to meet the licensing requirements of the BBS.

Each of our therapists has their own private office, along with use of our art room, play room, and sand tray room. We offer ongoing training in these and many other therapeutic models.

Compensation for our interns can vary, please contact us to discuss the current hourly pay. If you have experience, or are familiar with, EPSDT / Medi-Cal / Avatar, compensation could be higher. We offer a generous vacation package.

For more information on the licensing process or to check on the status of your counselor's license, the BBS has their own web site at http://www.bbs.ca.gov/

In addition to the training and education required by California law, we consistently seek out seminars and presentations that will enhance what each therapist can offer you in the therapeutic relationship.

These trainings have included the subjects of Mind and Body Connections, Sports and Exercise in the Recovery From Grief and Depression; research presentations into the raising levels of teen depression, drug use and discontent. The use of traditional, talk based therapies on the Internet.

We usually have about five interns at a time who stay two to three years. Over the past twenty years we have had about eighty interns. Most have gone on to start their own private practices or gone to work for a health care provider like Kaiser, or Sutter. Some have stayed here at Cross Creek for years in management positions.

Please call our office if you are interested in becoming an intern at Cross Creek Counseling.
